3.8 Serial growth scans

An individualised plan for serial growth scans is recommended for women who have an increased chance of SGA as per the NZMFMN SGA guideline, summarised in the algorithm in slide 3.2.

Serial scanning is also recommended when assessment by fundal height measurement is likely to be inaccurate (e.g. large fibroids, body mass index >35, multiple pregnancies, polyhydramnios).

The timing and number of serial growth scans for growth screening when factors associated with higher rates of SGA are present will vary according to the woman’s preferences and the midwife or obstetrician’s clinical judgement when considering her clinical picture. Some guidance is provided in slide 3.10.

Check local guidelines as individual DHBs will make recommendations based on local scanning resources.
